Defying Expectations: Leadership Lessons from Wicked and the Land of Oz

When we think of Oz, images of flying monkeys, ruby slippers, and the iconic yellow brick road come to mind. Yet, Gregory Maguire's Wicked Years series invites us to delve deeper into a rich, complex narrative that's both political and profoundly human.

As I'm currently reading Out of Oz and eagerly anticipating the release of Wicked: For Good this month, I'm inspired by how these tales capture the magic of leadership and its intricacies. Maguire's characters beautifully remind us that authentic leadership goes beyond perfection; it embodies conviction, the weight of our choices, and the bravery to stand firm, even when our journey may be misunderstood.

1. Elphaba Thropp: The Courage to Challenge the System

Elphaba, a powerful symbol of principled rebellion, earns leadership through her courage to speak out. In a world quick to fear the unfamiliar, she proudly stands by her truth. Her leadership style, a reminder that doing what's right may not always be popular, is inspiring. Despite facing misunderstanding and misrepresentation, her unwavering moral compass inspires us all to embrace authenticity and stay true to our values.

Leadership Lesson: True leaders boldly drive change without waiting for permission. They ask tough questions, take risks with their reputations, and confidently uphold their beliefs, even when faced with criticism.

2. Glinda Upland: The Power of Adaptability

Glinda's leadership style stands out through her diplomatic approach and vibrant persona. Initially, she may seem like Elphaba's polar opposite (charming, sociable, and well-connected). Yet as the story unfolds, we see Glinda evolve, realizing that her privilege carries significant responsibility. She discovers that authentic leadership goes beyond mere likability; it demands depth and purpose. Glinda's adaptability and growth are an encouraging example, showing that leadership can change and evolve. She matures beautifully, embracing the significance of her voice and choosing to wield it for a cause greater than her own comfort. It's an inspiring journey of growth and commitment to making a positive impact in the world!

Leadership Lesson: Adaptability is a mighty strength, especially when paired with authenticity. Authentic leadership flourishes when we recognize that purpose outweighs popularity.

3. Fiyero Tigelaar: The Strength of Vulnerability

Fiyero's journey is a captivating tale of transformation. As a prince, lover, and man navigating the balance between duty and desire, his leadership shines through not in commanding others, but in embracing his authentic self and values. His relationship with Elphaba inspires him to look beyond privilege, encouraging him to make choices driven by conscience rather than comfort. While his story concludes in tragedy, it beautifully illustrates how vulnerability and integrity can coexist harmoniously, leaving us with a powerful message about the strength of true character. Fiyero's story empowers us, showing that vulnerability is a true strength and a testament to courage.

Leadership Lesson: The most outstanding leaders embrace their humanity, using it to connect with and uplift others genuinely.

4. Liir: The Reluctant Heir to Leadership

In Son of a Witch and Out of Oz, Liir embarks on a compelling journey shaped by the legacy he inherits. Though he never aspired to be a leader, he courageously confronts his identity and connection to Elphaba. His unexpected emergence as a leader reflects a truth many face: sometimes, we find ourselves guiding others when we least expect it. Liir's story shows that leadership often emerges from moments of doubt, and our true purpose is unveiled through our experiences, not through the quest for flawlessness.

Leadership Lesson: Leadership isn't about having all the answers; it's about owning the impact of your actions.

5. Rain: The New Generation of Change

In Out of Oz, we experience the inspiring journey of Rain, Elphaba's granddaughter, who carries forward her grandmother's fiery spirit and grapples with her own uncertainties. Rain embodies the promise of new leadership, drawing wisdom from the past as she carves her own path. Her adventure beautifully illustrates that each leader stands on the shoulders of those who preceded them, and the most meaningful way to honor their legacy is to embrace growth and evolution in leadership.

Leadership Lesson: Legacy is all about innovation, not imitation. Authentic leaders embrace historical lessons while boldly shaping new and inspiring stories for the future.

A Mirror for Modern Leadership

The phrase "for good" beautifully conveys a dual meaning: permanence and positive change. As we explore chapters in the Wicked universe, we learn that leadership is both steadfast and dynamic.

Elphaba inspires us with her bravery, Glinda showcases the beauty of growth, Fiyero teaches us the importance of empathy, Liir reminds us of humility, and Rain embodies the spirit of renewal. Together, they illustrate that leadership isn't about being the strongest in Oz; it's about being driven by purpose.

As we journey down our own yellow brick roads, let's embrace the idea that leadership can manifest through defiance or grace, as long as it embodies growth and inspires others.
