The Power of Saying Yes - Stepping Outside Your Comfort Zone

Almost every moment that shaped me as a leader began with one little word: yes.
Yes to running for leadership roles on campus when I was still figuring out my voice. Yes to directing pageants in my hometown, even though I knew it would mean juggling big responsibilities. I remember the first time I took on these roles, I was overwhelmed with the tasks at hand, but I knew it was a chance to grow and make a difference in my communities.
Yes to stepping on stage (sometimes in a musical theatre performance, sometimes in front of a room full of students) when my nerves told me to sit down instead. Each time I said yes, I felt a surge of personal growth, stepping into a new version of myself.
Saying "yes" isn't always easy. In fact, it can feel risky. What if I fail? What if people judge me? What if I'm not good enough? These thoughts are honest, but here's the truth: growth and comfort don't usually hang out in the same place.
Why "Yes" Matters in Leadership
Yes builds confidence. When I agreed to be a club president during my first year as a college student, I was terrified. But that small yes taught me how to manage a group and believe in my ability to lead.
Yes opens doors. When I agreed to co-direct my town's pageant, it connected me to young women who remind me every day why mentorship is so important.
Yes inspires others. When students see me proudly embrace my quirks, I've learned that authenticity itself is a yes. One that encourages them to bring their whole selves to the table.
A Personal Example
When I was first asked to present at a Collegiate Leadership Summit, my instinct was to hesitate. Who would want to listen to me talk about leadership? But I said yes. What started as a 30-minute presentation has now evolved into a free leadership platform, reaching young women far beyond that summit room.
Another yes came during my own pageant journey. Competing meant putting myself out there to be judged, which is never a comfortable experience. But every time I said yes to preparing, rehearsing, and stepping on stage, I gained more than a crown; I gained resilience, communication skills, and a community of women who continue to lift me up. I remember the first time I stepped on stage; my heart was racing, but the applause and the sense of accomplishment I felt afterwards made it all worthwhile.
Challenge for You
This month, I challenge you to say yes to one opportunity that feels just outside your comfort zone. Maybe it's raising your hand in class, applying for a leadership role, starting a new project, or even sharing your story with someone else.
Write it down. Commit to it. Then, when the moment comes, remember: your yes could be the first step toward your next big adventure.
✨ Your Turn: What's something you're ready to say yes to this month? Share it with me in the comments, tag me on social media, and use #ReigningInLeadership so we can celebrate these brave steps together! I can't wait to cheer you on!
